As in every project, the place and programme are two imposed conditions that make the work unique. On this specific site, the place attempts to reconcile two different scales: the major scale, determined by the banks of the River IJ, and the minor scale, which is the heterogeneous internal urban structure of this part of the city. Our design proposal is based on the idea of creating an autonomous architectural project that resolves the point of intersection between these two scales while at the same time defining the future urban panorama of this stretch of the river. Bearing in mind that the waterfront façade will define the new skyline of this bank, the option is taken to place the entire residential complex facing the city of Amsterdam over the horizon of the River IJ. The resultant design consists of four prisms placed on a two-storey base arranged in zigzag formation in a public park running parallel to the river. The aim of this idea is to interpret the site in the best possible way, to articulate the various scales clearly, to strengthen the riverfront skyline and to improve the quality of the place.
